Specifically — upgrading the current air conditioning units in the high school will save tens of thousands of dollars in upkeep and energy costs — funds that could be used to provide the exceptional education that Mar Elias is known for.
Replacing the dated air conditioning units with more efficient ones will reduce energy consumption by 40% — a win for the environment as well!
The savings each year in energy plus reduced maintenance can save Mar Elias upwards of $50,000 each year! Thus, when we meet our $100,000 goal, and raise $200,000, your funds will repay themselves with these cost savings in a matter of years!
Student scholarships, always a need, will also be supported through this matching campaign effort — Mar Elias provides an unmatched education for its Palestinian students — an education steeped in respect, love of other, reconciliation and forgiveness and prepares students to lead Israel toward a more equitable and just future.

In the 1980s two Mar Elias Educational Institutions students came to the United States and stayed with a family in Houston, TX. They had to overcome quite a bit of anxiety and fears — at the time, anti-Arab (Palestinian) sentiment was latent and also blatant across the US. There was no internet or cell phones and communication with family back at home was expensive, thus rare, with only one phone line for an entire Palestinian village in Israel to share.
Yet the two students followed their curiosity and adventurous spirit and made the trip thousands of miles from home.
Nearly 40 years later, the impact of their visit lingers on, as shared by one of the hosting family members,
“Their courage, along with their authenticity, gentle acceptance and willingness to honestly speak the truth of their experiences was profound! Their transparency weaved connections that changed the lens through which many people viewed the situation in Israel/Palestine. Many of us began to see the connections – ‘we all come into the world as babies’ – and choose those over the divisiveness and lure to power and emptiness that the world was presenting us. Many lives were touched.”
